We go through our lives taking our physical body for granted most of the time don’t we. Or even giving our physical body a hard time and focusing on things it cannot do, or comparing it to others.
That is until you have been injured.
Then you just want your body to be as it used to be - pain free and mobile.
As we get older we need to look after it even better as it does not recover with such ease as when we were young.
I spent my early yoga years trying to get my body to bend extremely deeply, and when i could not do the deeper asanas (postures) i criticized myself and felt like a failure.
I was even criticized by a teacher for not being flexible enough! One teacher sat on my back in a forward fold and my back screamed at me in pain.!
It took me many many many years to get back to being pain free and i honestly thought it may never happen.
What i want you to know is that your flexiblity is not important - Yes it feels good to have an ease of movement and to not feel tight and tense. But actually your body’s stiffness is your body’s protection.
It is the bendy people that can cause more injury to their body as they can start stretching into ligaments - without the muscle tone to protect them.
That is why we teach holding back a little from the edge - not pushing past it.
That is why we don’t do deep adjustments in asanas.
That is why we say 80% effort 20% comfort/relaxation in the pose.
I learnt so much through my injury. I had so many years of pain and trying to figure out what i could do to feel better.
Not all yoga is good for your back!
Not all yoga is going to help you feel good. Trust me on this - you really can benefit from taking things a little easier and not aiming to simply be more flexible.
Rather work within your body’s own natural alignment.
I nearly hung up my yoga mat and stopped teaching.
That is when I found Hot Yoga and my Teacher who had spent his career “fixing” injured professional athletes.
When i did my hot yoga teacher training i was in such pain - just moving and i felt like crying most days. But i was so glad that i found Jozef who gave me such hope that i can fix myself by being very gentle with myself, my alignment and a continued practice.
I literally practiced for a minimum of 3 times a week for many years because i wanted to be pain free. And after studying Jozef’s Applied anatomy it all made total sense.
I feel blessed to have found him and i never take my body for granted again.
I feel so passionately about what i learnt that i want you all to benefit from a SAFE yoga practice. Leave the gymnastics to the gymnasts and use yoga as a way to heal your body and feel more peaceful in your mind.
I know that so many of you suffer with back problems, so many days off work each year are due to back ailments.
Backs can be really tricky to fix. And I know when i went to my Doctor about my back all those years again - they could offer strong pain killers and recommend moving my body.
There was no specific guidance on what movement or how. And I really did not want to take heavy medication as I had young children to care for.
So I want you to know that you can help yourself by moving with alignment and awareness.
I even wrote a book with some back care advice in.
I want you all to experience wellness and I feel so confident that coming to practice with us at My Soul Space you can rest assured you are in safe hands.
I Also offer 1-2-1 sessions for back care so do get in touch if you are interested.
If you would like to know more in depth of how to care for your physical body - whether it be back, hips, knees, necks etc - then i recommend attending our weekend workshop with Jozef Wiewel. He will bring his skeleton along with him and share his knowledge on how you can move your body in a way that will get you well, keep you well and you will be able to go on and enjoy all the sports you love.
The Applied Anatomy workshop is on 29th February / 1st March 2020
